Another Top-Five Finish for Steckly

Steckly entering turn 1 at Mosport International Raceway
Bowmanville, ON. Scott Steckly, driver of the #22 Erb Group/ Thermo King/ AW Millwrights Pontiac Grand Prix, put together another excellent finish in the fourth race of this CASCAR Super Series season. The setting for the race this weekend was at the road course of Mosport International Raceway, which is the first of three road courses' on the CASCAR Super Series schedule this year.
Saturday, June 19th saw the Milverton native post his best qualifying position of the season, as he started in fourth place, with a qualifying time of 1:28.120 seconds around the big, 10 turn, 2.459 mile course. The #22 pit crew knew that it is very difficult to pass of the road course at Mosport so starting up front would be one of the keys to victory.
After running a few laps under green at the start of the race, the first and only full course caution came out when the #84 car of J.R. Fitzpatrick burst into flames in turn 1, but he walked away fine. From then on the race would be run under green. Steckly remained in fourth position until lap 13 of 52 when he was passed by the #25 of Jim Lapcevich and Kerry Micks of the #02 machine, which dropped Scott down to sixth position. With some of the other cars in the field starting to make pit stops on lap 21, crew chief Ken Gropp decided that the Erb Group Pontiac should soon make their pit stop. On lap 24 the Erb Group pit crew worked their magic as they quickly changed all 4 tires and also added fuel into the race car. After entering the pits in 6th place, the Erb Group Grand Prix ended up leaving in third place, but over 30 seconds behind the leader and eventual race winner Jeff Lapcevich. On lap 34 Don Thomson Jr. ended up catching up to Scott in turn 4 and the pass ended up sending Steckly back one place into fourth. For the last 17 laps Scott just had to ride it out as the next closest car behind Scott was well over 10 seconds behind. However, Scott did not escape the race without a scare as on lap 45 the rivets on the right- front quarter panel came loose and a bit of the fender was hanging off of the car. But nothing resulted from it and Steckly finished the race in fourth place with his third top five in four races this season. After the race Steckly had this to say about his excellent day at the track "We have always had good finishes on road courses in the past and today we had a good set- up in the car and came away with a solid finish in fourth". With this fourth place finish Scott Steckly has now moved up to a tie for sixth place in the championship standings with 550 points.
