Another Top-Ten for Steckly

Scott Steckly, driving during his qualifying run at Cayuga Speedway on Sunday.

Nelles Corner, ON. Despite the rainy weather over the past weekend CASCAR Super Series teams still managed to get in their Labour Day race at Cayuga Speedway. Scott Steckly, driver of the #22 Erb Group Dodge racing team arrived in at Cayuga on Saturday, September 2nd ready to practice and qualify for Sunday’s race. However, because of all the rain leftover from Hurricane Ernesto, Saturday’s events had to be postponed until Sunday. Cayuga Speedway has never been kind to Steckly, but Scott has never raced at Cayuga with Dodge power either.

Because of the rain, all of the weekend’s events went on Sunday. The day got underway with qualifying. Steckly posted the 12th fastest time around the track. The teams then had to race in twin 50-lap qualifying heats. Scott was in the second heat and started in the sixth position. Scott got off to a fast start in the heat, on lap 12 he passed #10 of Doug Brown and on lap 20 he passed #23 Jeff Lapcevich. For the last 20 laps of the race Scott was right on the back bumper of Ron Beauchamp Jr. and Kerry Micks, but he was unable to make the pass. The Erb Group Dodge finished the heat race in fourth place, meaning Steckly would start the Hothead Henry 200 in the eighth position.

The feature race went later on that night, and Steckly was looking to continue his strong racing from earlier on that day. When the green flag dropped, Scott was immediately passed by DJ Kennington, dropping Steckly down to ninth place. Steckly remained in ninth until lap 59. That is when there was a big wreck involving the #09 of Kent Nuhn and #12 of Richard Durivage. Crew chief Greg Gibson decided that the team would remain out for track position, while some other teams pitted and this move pushed the team into the top-5. During the next green flag run, Steckly was passed by Ron Beauchamp and Jason Hathaway. Following the #22 teams pit stop on lap 101, they resumed the race in 11th place. By lap 155, Steckly passed Jim Lapcevich for eighth. During the final caution of the day, crew chief Gibson made another pit stop, with the hopes that with newer tires Steckly could pass some of the slower cars that remained on the lead lap. He came out of the pit in 11th. Steckly moved into 10th and was working on passing series leader J.R. Fitzpatrick in the closing laps when #4 Don Thomson was involved in a last lap spin. Former Champ Car driver Patrick Carpentier was also in the race and ended up crossing the finish line backwards in 6th place. After all the excitement of the final lap, Scott was recorded in 9th position. “I think this was one of my best finishes at Cayuga, so we’ll take it and move on. I’m really looking forward to St Eustache and Kawartha, where we have run well in the past”

The next race in the CASCAR Super Series goes this Saturday night at St. Eustache, PQ. The final CASCAR race of the year is Sunday, September 17th at Kawartha Speedway.
